Sugarcane Saint marks Tallamy’s powerful debut in historical fiction and is the first in her planned Book of Ruth trilogy. Set in Stone Mountain, Georgia, from 1918 through 1965, the novel examines the legacy of family secrets and generational trauma against the backdrop of segregation in the American South. The story follows one woman's seduction, isolation, and eventual destruction as she becomes the unwilling matriarch of an agonizing cycle of abuse—a cycle whose effects ripple across decades.
